I have the seen the ones that you are describing, with the Jazz pickups and pickguard. If yours is Korean made it was likely considered a Saratoga, but they had not yet pushed the pickups closer together like they are now. If its a Czech made bass then it is most likely a Grendel or Stadium bass.

Awesome! Thank you so much! Thats crazy, I didn’t know they made them in Korea. I knew about the grendal and stadium but there’s no logo that are usually on those basses, it’s just the classic MTD logo at the end of the headstock but the head stock is the longer Saratoga style. That would be cool if it was Korean too, I have a Korean Warwick corvette and it’s actually better than the German one I own too, Korea made some great basses back in the day

So I did a good bit of research, it is most likely a Korean Saratoga. And mine is the early model that are apparently very good and rare basses that people like to hold on to, it does have a 3 band eq pre amp but with no mid eq switch so it is pre set on the middle setting of “on”. I’m going to put a switch in so that I can have the option of mid cut, on, and boost. I’m still doing the research on the bartolini system in it, it’s custom made electronics and pick ups for MTD

I have tried a few different sets of Barts in this bass. Currently I am running the 2J Quads.

In the late 90's it would've been the crazy "slap mode" preamp that Gibson made Bartolini make lol. I personally could only ever use that preamp in slap mode as the "normal" mode was way too dark and muddy. What was super special IMO is the perfect marriage Bill and Mike found in the drop shoulder pickups and the TCT preamp that his earliest Hollywood basses used 🤤

@AdamSaylorBass the Growler is serial # 187, I think, which makes it an early model. My 5 string was a lacewood body and started to split at the neck joint, unfortunately, and I had to get rid of it. The preamp on the Growler is insane! So is yours a pre Gibson? I really don't know why Gibson destroyed the brand...

It makes it an early Nashville model for sure, probably with the quad coil pickup and stacked treble/bass pots for each coil. Mike had nothing to do with the Growler model and very little to do with the beginnings of the Killer B model, both of which follow their own serial numbering separate from Mike's.

Yes. I just found that for my preferences, the CBJD3 play to the strengths of the TCT better than the B Axis.

These are the Bartolini 2J Squared pickups

I looked at the Bartolini website, my brother! but as I found varieties in the same range of pickups... I would like to know if you are using the m4, m5 or mk line? and I see in your bass you have a circuit with a stacked potentiometer... it would be circuit 5.2 or 5.4! because my brother!! That bass of yours is amazing! I really liked the setup and I had been researching Bartolini for some time to improve my bass and I ended up finding your channel!! won a writing!! God bless you

Mine are the M5 model, but that would be much too big to fit in the Tobias pickup size cavities (unless it's a Korean Toby Pro)

Hi Adam, you make great and informative videos. I have a 635 and wanted to know what these pickup shapes are? I’m leaning heavily on this model pup because it has so much more clarity and girth than the original pups shipped which I don’t like. Looks like the other one you use is either an AG or EMG. Please advise.✅

​​@@DaMaestroFirst off, very honored to have you stopping by one of my vids! Second, the MTD pickup size is M5. If you want to give the 2J a shot, you will want the M562J model since you have a 6 string. Hope that helps!

@@AdamSaylorBass have you tried the XTCT or know what the difference is?

I did use the XTCT for a short while in one of my other basses. It's a slightly altered tuning. Mid cut is set to 500hz vs the 300Hz of the TCT and the treble/bass curves are slightly different.

I believe this was mids full and bass/treble at detent.

Yep. I put a custom TCT in (which is what all the pre-Gibson Tobiases used).

He used his own internals, it's not the normal MTD stuff lol.

MTDs are what you make them man. The tone isn't built in, you gotta create it.
